It is a promising minimally invasive treatment for uterine fibroids. The main indications are:
- Fibroids causing menorrhagia ( heavy bleeding )
- Dysmenorrhoea ( severe pain during menses)
- Adenomyosis
It is also indicated in cases of bleeding from the uterus due to uterine arteriovenous malformations or post-partum hemorrhage (bleeding just after child birth).
It is a minimally invasive day care procedure performed under local anaesthesia. Small incisions of 2-3mm are made in the groin area to stop the blood supply to fibroids. The procedure is contraindicated in cases of malignancy, acute or chronic infection or if the patient is pregnant. UTE is effective for multiple and large fibroids. It is a day care/overnight stay procedure and involves less post-operative complications. All multiple and large fibroids can be treated in one sitting and the patient can return to normalcy in few days. Recurrence of treated fibroids is very rare. It can be done in patients unfit or unwilling for General or Regional anaesthesia. 85-90% of women had a positive UFE experience and a total relief in heavy bleeding, pain or bulk-related symptoms.
