Ampulla of Vater is located in the second part of duodenum where bile duct and pancreatic duct join and drain their juices into the intestine. Cancer arising in the vicinity of the ampulla of Vater is known as periampullary cancer. It consists of
- Ampullary cancer in Ampulla of Vater
- Lower common bile duct cancer
- Duodenal cancer adjacent to ampulla
- Head of pancreas cancer
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS:
- Progressive jaundice
- Itching
- White stools
- Tea colored urine
- Loss of weight
- Pain abdomen
- Vomiting
TREATMENT:
Surgery: Only curative treatment option is surgery i.e. Whipple’s procedure (also known as pancreaticoduodenectomy).
Chemotherapy: Based on the cancer stage chemotherapy may be prescribed to prevent the recurrence/ spread of the cancer
Radiotherapy: Is increasingly prescribed in before surgery (Neoadjuvant) for better local control of the pancreatic head cancers.
