Abhay is a first-generation Entrepreneur and Chairman & Managing Director of Max Healthcare Institute Limited and has been largely credited with the transformation of the company and rapid expansion of its hospital network.
Max Healthcare is one of the largest publicly listed hospital chains in India with a market cap of over USD 10bn, while reserving 7.5% of its beds for free service to patients from economically weaker sections of society. It is a network of 22 hospitals with over 5000 bed capacity and employs over 35,000 personnel. In addition to its core hospital business, Max Healthcare operates one of the largest healthcare at home businesses– Max@Home, and one of the largest pathology services in North India under the brand Max Lab. Most of Max Healthcare hospitals are teaching hospitals with over 500 DNB students and more than 100 ongoing clinical research projects, many of which are published in some of the leading and well-respected medical journals.
Abhay personally drives the philanthropic activities at Max Healthcare. The organisation has provided free of cost treatment to over 3.6 lakh patients from economically weaker sections of society in the last financial year. Max Healthcare organised over 1,600 outpatient camps in the communities and reached over 1,15,000 people.
Abhay presently serves as the President of NATHEALTH, the apex body representing the Indian healthcare industry for FY 24-25.
He has been awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the Forbes India Leadership Awards 2023, the ‘Hurun Industry Achievement Award 2022 - Healthcare’ for significantly contributing to the development of the healthcare infrastructure of the country, and the EY Entrepreneur of the Year for Business Transformation in 2021.
Abhay is also one of the leading voices for private healthcare in India and is regularly heard on national debates on issues facing private healthcare providers.
He started his career with Arthur Andersen, where he led financial restructuring services, and then at E&Y and KPMG.
Abhay was conferred with an honorary doctoral degree (honoris causa) by Amity University for his contributions to transform and improve the healthcare system in India.
