A 4-year-old boy came to the emergency of Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, with high-grade fever and severe joint pain, which made it difficult for him to even stand. A clinical examination & MRI was immediately done to know the cause of such severe pain. The boy was diagnosed with Acute Septic Arthritis. Treatment usually comprises IV antibiotics depending on the culture & sensitivity of the pus.
Acute Septic Arthritis in children is a painful infection of the joint. It is usually caused by bacteria via the haematogenous route. Sluggish blood flow in growing bones makes it more susceptible. It is seen more commonly in boys and usually involves large joints like the hip, knee and ankle joints. Children usually present with high-grade fever and swollen, red, painful joints. Children have limited & painful movement of the joint and is unable to bear body weight. Usually, the child recovers well if it’s not complicated & treated on time.
Surgical drainage of the pus from the infected joint was done. Serial monitoring of laboratory blood parameters was done. Antibiotics were given for 3-4 days. And lastly, rehabilitation of the limb was done with appropriate physiotherapy techniques. The boy responded so well that the doctors were able to drain the pus easily, and after a week, he was fit to be discharged.
