  • Basic Training (ST1-ST2)
Junior doctors can enter the structured training programme at ST1 level and follow the RCOG Core O&G curriculum for a period of five years. Years 1 and 2 (ST1 & ST2) are basic training. The first critical progression point will be from ST2 to ST3, as the trainee will normally be ‘stepping up’ to become the obstetrics and gynaecology registrar. It is essential that educational and clinical supervisors are confident that the trainee has the ability to perform in this role. Trainees will be required to complete Part 1 MRCOG by the end of year 2 of training (ST2). The ARCP at the end of ST2 will play an important role in determining personalised, supportive plans for transition to the O&G registrar role.
  • Intermediate Training (ST3-ST5)
Following attainment of the MRCOG Part 1 and successful completion of basic training competencies, trainees will progress to ST3 level training. By the end of intermediate training trainees will need to have reached the appropriate level of supervision in their clinical practice, either; Level 3 ‘Entrusted to act under indirect supervision (supervisor immediately available on site if needed to provide direct supervision)’ or Level 4 ‘Entrusted to act independently with support (supervisor not required to be immediately available on site, but there is provision for advice or to attend if required)’, depending on the competency. The end of ST5 is a critical progression point when the trainee must pass the Part 2 and Part 3 MRCOG, as well as be signed off for the relevant generic and specialty outcomes and practical procedures.
  • Advanced Training (ST6-ST7)
Following attainment of the MRCOG Part 1 and successful Following successful completion of ST5, trainees will progress into ST6 and register to complete two ATSMs from those currently available. In addition, trainees must demonstrate ongoing competencies in the Core Curriculum for ST6 and ST7 and will be required to reach level 5 entrustability ‘Entrusted to act independently’ in all clinical specialty key skills by the completion of training. The Advanced Training Skills Modules (ATSMs) provide a framework for training by defining the standards required to work at consultant level. They also encourage the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of clinical and professional practice, and the trainee to take responsibility for their own learning, as they would as a consultant. Trainees exiting the programme will be skilled in managing the labour ward independently and managing the acute gynaecological on-call service. They will have expertise in practical procedures related to the clinical care of women and will be expert communicators with strong interpersonal skills, strong emotional intelligence and will be adept in the management of sensitive situations. These core areas ensure that doctors in training and beyond can provide safe care whilst working in a range of challenging and diverse work environments, balancing acute and non- emergency service provision.
  • MRCOG Examinations
The MRCOG exam and curriculum is valued globally and recognised as an indicator of excellence in O&G education. Part 1 and 2 exams are now delivered digitally via our partner Pearson VUE, making it easier than ever before for our candidates to sit an MRCOG exam close to home. Part 3 exams are delivered across nine RCOG international examination centres as well as via a remote online exam. Global demand is growing with candidate numbers upwards of 10,000 per year across 48 countries. The exam is a three-part assessment:
    • MRCOG Part 1: A written examination to evaluate basic and clinical sciences relevant to the subject.
    • MRCOG Part 2: A written examination that assesses the application of knowledge
    • MRCOG Part 3: A stand-alone clinical skills exam that assesses candidates' ability to apply core clinical skills in the context of the skills, as defined in the MRCOG curriculum. The Part 3 MRCOG is part of the assessment and validation process for entry on to the UK Specialist Register and progress to a consultant post in O&G.
    • All trainees taking part in an RCOG accredited training programme will be required have passed or to sit the relevant MRCOG examinations for the stage of the RCOG Curriculum being delivered.
    • Workplace based Assessments: - Regular workplace based assessments are conducted throughout training with an ARCP . Students undergo ARCP Annually during the programme.
    • A UK expert from RCOG will be present at all ARCPs to ensure a UK equivalent standard is achieved.
